From the very first time I picked up a Manga novel and read about the ninja and the samurai and when I first saw Bruce Lee take on an entire dojo – I was taken by the world of Martial Arts. I was amazed by their speed and power, their accuracy and precision – their pure skill. They were heroes and I wanted to be like them. Despite this, I never thought that I could be a fighter like them, a hero – the idea of actually training in a style was not something that I really thought about.
So why did I join? Personally, there were countless reasons for my joining ranging from fitness through to my love and intense passion for the Martial Arts – its philosophy, tradition, spirit, combat and culture. I suppose the most deeply embedded root for why I took up Martial Arts was to protect... in order to possess the necessary skills needed to defend others, and myself – a personal goal. Finally, in my eyes my parents were also heroes… they are fearless. To be without fear, an incredible quality that I coveted.
All of these causes induced a cascade of thoughts, all of which took part in my final decision to sign up. My thirst for knowledge made me search and join a style that taught everything. I believe that there is no such thing as a single approach or method, a student must be taught everything; given an artillery of techniques to master. I was lucky in joining Fighting Fit, a style that emphasised technique and insisted on teaching what works. I was welcomed into its family of friendly people all of whom had a strong essence of martial etiquette.
The only thing I regret is not joining earlier.
